Sarah University of Rochester
I am currently a senior at the University of Rochester, working toward a dual degree in Computer Science and Brain & Cognitive Science.
What is one of your favorite parts about your post-high school experience?
My favorite part about being in college is having the freedom to take classes in any area I want to study. There is such a wide variety of classes offered at colleges, and some in subjects I had never heard of prior to beginning college. Being able to explore lots of new topics is something I really appreciate.
How did you use your scholarship funds?
My scholarship funds went directly toward tuition, which gives me access to the schools equipment and textbooks that are available for students to borrow.
What advice would you give to your high school self or those looking to apply for a scholarship?
Explore all of your options in everything. You might have a strong feeling of what you want to pursue in college, but taking classes outside your major can introduce you to something you may love even more. I had no experience in computer science or programming going into college, and had I not taken the class I would not have discovered my love for computer science and be majoring in it now. I also would recommend that students looking for scholarships apply to many, since you never know where each one may take you. There are many scholarships that I was fortunate enough to have received that I thought about not applying to originally, so never doubt your ability and give it your best shot!
Additional Accomplishments:
I've attached a picture of myself from my internship this past summer at Disney where I was a machine learning intern. I have also begun looking for software engineering jobs in the Rochester area to help contribute to some of the many amazing companies that are in Rochester!

Going to the University of Rochester has opened up many doors for me, giving me research experiences as well as the opportunity to intern at Walt Disney World, which was certainly a dream come true for a huge Disney fan such as myself! I am looking forward to graduating this year and continue to be grateful for the generosity of ESL for the scholarship.
