Mia Cornell University
I'm currently in my senior year at Cornell University. I am majoring in Biology and Society with minors in Nutrition and Global Health.
What is one of your favorite parts about your post-high school experience?
I've had so many incredible experiences and opportunities through Cornell. This summer I went to Moshi, Tanzania with the Cornell Global Health Program and it was definitely one of my most rewarding experiences. During the first half of the summer, I was able to really apply the knowledge I've gained in the classroom by participating in a health policy case study with medical students from Kilimanjaro Christian Medical University College (KCMUCo). Our research was titled "Social Vulnerability of Women Among Infertile Couples in Tanzania," and it focused on the social implications of infertility in Tanzania. For the second half of the summer, I was able to volunteer at a children's home near Moshi. Throughout the summer I lived with a homestay family and really tried to embrace and explore the culture and customs of Tanzania.
How did you use your scholarship funds?
I was able to use the scholarship funds to cover my books and supplies for several semesters.
What advice would you give to your high school self or those looking to apply for a scholarship?
I would tell my high school self to do your very best to live in the moment; senior year goes by in a flash and it's important to cherish the memories you'll make. When it comes to applying for scholarships, put your most genuine self on the paper and apply for everything — you never know what will happen!
