John RodriguezPittsford Sutherland High School
A strong set of values and compassion for those around him is what sets John apart from others. His involvement within the community includes volunteering for RFAM Youth, Allens Creek mentoring, Roc2Change, and Walk against Domestic Violence. John has also helped those affected by Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico by loading trucks with materials they were lacking for survival and comfort. Within his school, he gained leadership roles through the Diversity Club, Best Buddies, and Sources of Strength. John’s kindheartedness and remarkable service experience has lead him to his current position as Youth Apprentice at Rochester General Health where he supports staff and patients in need.
Thank you, John, for your continuous drive to making the Rochester community thrive and prosper. Congratulations on your scholarship!
One interesting fact about John: “I am a bilingual individual. I am fluent in both English and Spanish.”
Attending school in fall 2021: “This September, I intend to attend American University in Washington, D.C. I intend to major in political science with a pre-law specialization. My goal is to practice international immigration law.”
How do you plan to use your scholarship funds? “I intend to use my scholarship funding to purchase books and upgrade my computer in preparation for college.”
What parts of high school are you most proud of? “I am really proud of myself after four years in high school. I became quite involved in the community and was a member of a number of school clubs. I was vice-president of Diversity Club, an advisor for Roc2Change, a source of strength ambassador, and many other things. Many of these clubs are dedicated to assisting others and bringing great energy to the school. Diverse, inclusive, and equitable work are very important to me. I've committed my career to combating racial injustices, prejudices, and other forms of discrimination. Several accolades have been given to me, including the Pittsford Pride Award, the Citizenship Award, and the Superintendent Scholarship Award from Pittsford Schools Superintendent Michael Pero.”
What John is most looking forward to in his college career: “Internships in Washington, DC, the epicenter of world politics, are something I'm looking forward to. I also want to participate in political campaigns, visit museums and monuments, meet new people, and broaden my social network.”
