Review our FAQs to learn more about Employee Resource Groups:

What is an ERG?

Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) are networks of employees sponsored by their employers that are created based on shared characteristics or backgrounds. Usually, ERG members share common workplace needs. The groups advocate for themselves and, in addition to fostering their own professional development, often become valuable resources to their employers. They provide information about their identities, perform community outreach, open new networks for recruiting, and serve as a visible sign of their employer's commitment to a diverse, equitable, and inclusive workplace.

An ERG Program is a great way to encourage employee engagement. They not only support internal employees, who are part of historically excluded identity groups, but they can also inform how we support our customers and the larger Greater Rochester community.

What does being a part of an ERG mean at ESL?

At ESL, being part of an ERG means actively participating in an organized, employee-centered program built to support individuals within the identity group and build capacity for allyship for others. The groups serve as employee communities, providing a safe space for employees to share experiences and learn from one another. Furthermore, they also serve as resources for the larger organization, supporting the diversity of identities encompassed by the employee population.

ERGs are supported and guided by the ESL Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion department at ESL. These are employee led groups, with an organized structure that allows for shared responsibilities and leadership opportunities. Employees who participate in an ERG can also learn valuable skills that will serve them well in their immediate job role and any future roles they might be interested in during their time at ESL.

Why do we feel it's important to host this event?

From 2019-2022 we planned and launched our ERG Program at ESL. Through this process we had many learnings that we felt would be beneficial to share with others who are starting ERGs at their organizations. While we might operate differently, the best practices remain consistent and can be scaled depending on your type of organization or industry.

Building and sustaining an ERG Program requires a collaborative effort from multiple organizational stakeholders. We look forward to sharing what that collaboration has looked like in practice at ESL over the last several years. We are also excited to have a range of tenure and experience on the panel to share their own perspectives on what makes for a successful ERG at both ESL and among other organizations.
