This summer, we welcomed more than a dozen college students who worked at ESL through our Student Employment Program. Each of them received an experience as unique as they are through working in our branches, Consumer Lending, Data Management, Diversity, Equity & Inclusion, Home Equity, Loan Servicing, or Member Service Support departments.
We asked several of our students to share some of their learnings. We invite you to learn more about our summer students and why they came to ESL!
Q&A with Safiatou Barry, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Student Coordinator
What prompted you to apply for a summer internship at ESL?
When I came across the job listing on LinkedIn and researched ESL as a company, I was impressed to find that it is consistently ranked as one of America’s best workplaces. This reputation motivated me to apply, eager to be part of such a respected organization.
What has your experience been like?
My experience here has been nothing short of amazing. As the first Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion intern, I've had the privilege of learning invaluable skills from my manager, Sydney Bell, including project management and critical thinking. These skills are not only applicable within a work environment but also in various facets of life.
What stands out the most?
The standout feature for me has been the genuine kindness and evident job satisfaction among the people here. From day one, I noticed how friendly everyone is, fostering a welcoming atmosphere even towards unfamiliar faces.
What are your future career plans?
My future career aspirations involve securing a role in diversity within a cosmetics corporate setting, where I aim to promote inclusivity across products, models, and beyond.
What advice would you like to share with other students in their educational and professional journey?
I encourage fellow students to seize every opportunity, no matter how small it may seem. Every experience is a chance to learn and grow, leading to unforeseen opportunities that can shape your future.
