Internet Banking Supported Browsers ^top

In an effort to provide ESL members with the best possible products and services, we will focus our future development and support on current versions of leading Internet browser software. We believe that utilizing current generation software will ultimately optimize the Internet experience for end users.

For optimal security, ESL requires the use of browsers with 128-bit encryption to access Internet Banking.

If you have questions about the information on this page, see our Frequently Asked Questions.

How do I read this table?

To see if your browser is supported by ESL Internet Banking, read across the row that starts with the Operating System you are using. Browsers that are "Supported" have been thoroughly tested with ESL Internet Banking and support all the technologies we use.
* "Win 2000, SP4" refers to Windows 2000 Service Pack 4, and "Win XP, SP2" refers to Windows XP Service Pack 2. If you do not have the most recent Service pack for your Microsoft Operating System you may be missing out on important security updates. Please visit WindowsUpdate.com to see if your OS needs to be updated.

What browser am I using right now?

To find out...

  • At the top of your browser window, click on Help.
  • Select About [browser name].
  • This will tell you the version of the browser you are using. Compare this version number to the table above.

Incompatible Browser Versions

Browsers that are "Not Supported" or do not appear on this list should not be used to access ESL Internet Banking because they may present a security risk or not support the basic technologies necessary to use Internet Banking.

If you are using an older version of one of the browsers listed above, we recommend you upgrade your browser to the latest supported version by using the links at the top of the table. Using newer versions of your browser helps ensure that you are protected by the most recent security updates and will improve your experience on this and other web sites. Please be aware as the Internet grows so does the technology around it. Browsers that work today with Internet Banking may become obsolete in the future. Additionally, as new browser versions are released, they must undergo extensive testing to ensure they support the technologies we use. As a result, newly released browser versions may not yet be "Supported".

Note for Internet Explorer Users

Please note that some older versions of Microsoft Internet Explorer have been known to have problems with Secure Socket Layers (one of the security technologies used on ESL.org). Microsoft is aware of the problems and have placed several patches on their site for the Internet Explorer browsers. Microsoft also had made some recommendations as to what version may fit your needs. You must have all of the patches installed to your browser in order for it to work properly with Internet Banking.

Browser Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if my browser supports 128 bit encryption?

Most browsers currently available support 128-bit encryption. To determine if your browser supports 128-bit encryption, click on Help in the toolbar of your Internet browser and click on About [browser name]. A pop-up box or window will display.

  • For Internet Explorer - Next to "Cipher strength" you should see "128-bit".
  • All versions of Firefox 1.0 and greater support 128-bit encryption.

If your browser does not support 128-bit encryption, you will need to upgrade to a browser that does in order to continue to access secure pages of the website. See the list of compatible browsers at the top of this page.

Why has ESL stopped supporting all the earlier versions of the most common browsers?

ESL has not stopped supporting some earlier versions of browsers, and many of the earlier versions still work with ESL products. However, due to the proliferation of browsers and browser versions, it is no longer feasible for us to test and certify every browser version used to access our products.

Why does ESL use JavaScript in its products when it is known that some browsers are unable to process JavaScript?

There are many good reasons to use JavaScript. For example, when using JavaScript, some validation and computation tasks are performed on the end user's browser rather than sending the transaction to the host for the computation. This provides a faster overall response time for the end user.

Does this policy mean that users who don't have one of the browsers listed above will not be able to access ESL's website any longer?

Many browsers will still work fine with ESL's products. In fact, there are currently over 200 different browser versions that are used to access ESL applications, though not all are certified.

What Operating System versions are used for testing?

  • Windows 2000, SP4
  • Windows XP, SP2
  • Mac OSX

Internet Banking Login Errors ^top

I got an error message - what does it mean?

An error message is a computer's way of telling us that something does not "compute." Here is a list of some of the most frequent Internet Banking login error messages and what they mean.

Error Cause Resolution
Browser Configuration Error The browser that you are using is not properly configured to use this site. Make sure you are using a supported browser and review your browser settings. If you continue to receive this message, contact ESL Online Chat (800.848.2265).
Session Timeout For your security, your Internet Banking session has timed out after a period of inactivity. Log into Internet Banking again. You may increase the timeout period by clicking "User Options" in the top-right portion of the screen and then clicking "Change Timeout." Keep in mind that a shorter timeout period makes it less likely that someone else can access your Internet Banking account.
#1008 For your security, this Internet Banking account has been locked out. This usually happens because there were a number of unsuccessful login attempts for this account. Click on password reset and follow the prompts.
#1040 Invalid Login Attempt - the member number or password supplied was incorrect. Make sure you are using the correct member number and password (remember: passwords are case-sensitive). If you don't remember your password or your account gets locked out because of too many login attempts, fill out our secure password request form, or contact ESL Online Chat (800.848.2265) to have your password reset or your account unlocked.
#1512 Due to increased security, your computer settings will not allow you to login.
Please be certain you allow the page to fully load before you type or click.
Close your browser and re-open it, wait until the homepage is finished loading (the "status bar" on bottom-left of your browser window says "Done.") before trying to log into Internet Banking.

If you are still receiving the 1512 error and you do have the Content Advisor enabled, follow these instructions to prevent the error.
#1516 You attempted to log in to Internet Banking while there was already an active Internet Banking session on the same computer. Close any open browser windows, then visit esl.org and log in again.
#1518 The page that you are requesting can only be accessed after a successful login. This error can have a number of causes:
  1. You tried to log in to Internet Banking before the home page was done loading.
  2. You clicked a link in Internet Banking after clearing your browser cookies.
  3. The session cookie was not set by Internet Banking.
  4. You clicked a link or a bookmark to a page inside Internet Banking without logging in first.
Try the following:
  1. Wait until the homepage is finished loading (the "status bar" on bottom-left of your browser window says "Done.") before trying to log into Internet Banking.
  2. Log out of Internet Banking and clear your browser cookies.
  3. Close any open browser windows, then visit esl.org and try to log in again.
  4. Log in to Internet Banking before using any bookmarks to IB pages.

If you receive any login error messages not listed above, please contact ESL Online Chat (800.848.2265).
